Common Mistakes When Preparing for the Citizenship Test

The errors that waste study time: the wrong test version, outdated names, silent reading, and treating a website quiz as the interview.

The civics list is public. The mistakes are usually about the rules around the list, not about finding a secret question.

  • Studying 128 questions when the filing date requires the 2008 list, or the reverse.
  • Memorizing a president, speaker, or senator from an old screenshot.
  • Giving one state when the question says “name three,” or giving a speech when one noun would do.
  • Assuming the 65/20 short list applies because the full list feels long.
  • Treating a multiple-choice score as a pass or a fail of the real test.
  • Using a study app that claims a government partnership or a guaranteed approval.

A better last week

Redo only the questions you missed. Say them standing up, the way you will be sitting across from an officer. Open the USCIS updates page once. Then stop adding new materials. New videos the night before mostly add noise.

Citizen Prep US does not promise that you will pass, and it is not a USCIS product. The officer applies the official test.
