If USCIS received your Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, you study the 2008 civics test, not the 128-question list. The officer asks up to 10 questions from the bank of 100. Six correct answers pass. Five incorrect answers end the civics portion as not passed. The officer can stop once the result is clear.

What is in the 100

The questions are grouped into American government, American history, and integrated civics — geography, symbols, and holidays. Geography questions such as the oceans, rivers, and bordering states are on this version. They are easy to skip if you only study a 2025 list.

Say the answer the way the question is built

  • “What are two…” needs two answers.
  • “Name three” of the original states needs three states from the list.
  • One right from the First Amendment is enough for that question: speech, religion, assembly, press, or petition.

Officeholder answers on older printouts are often out of date. Use the USCIS updates page, not a PDF saved years ago.
